Get to know a War Painter – Blighted Brush Studios

Secret or loud and proud painter/gamer?
Loud and proud definitely. When you have a hobby that is truly fulfilling you should not keep it to yourself.

What age did you get into painting and what started it off?
Probably in my teenage years.  I started playing my first miniatures game, Mage Knight and remember always hacking up the models and building new things and painting over them.  Of course, they looked awful, but I think that’s when my interest was really started.

What was the first model you ever painted?
Not counting painting over Mage Knight models, the first board game I bought with minis was Last Night on Earth. I bought it because I really like Zombie movies and it is basically that in board game form.  I remember being a little disappointing because the models were all bare coloured plastic, and then I decided to at least try painting them.  I used cheap craft paints and brushes and a floor stain dip method for shading/varnishing that was popular back then.

What is your favourite brush/paint brand?
I really really like my Raphael 8404’s (Thanks, Scott aka Miniac, for recommending them). For paints, I mainly use Citadel and Vallejo but I am becoming more familiar with other brands as well. I am excited to try Scale 75 at some point soon.

What are you working on right now?
Thousand Sons Scarab Occult Terminators for a Kill Team: Elite commission. The person I am painting them for has already gotten 3 other Kill Team commissions from me and I really enjoy doing them. I had done a Rubric Marine Kill Team for myself when the game came out, but I didn’t really have time to play the game and ended up selling them on eBay. He bought them and has since had me do Tzaangors and Grey Knights as well.

What model would you love to paint that you haven’t done yet? What
models do you really enjoy painting?

I REALLY want to paint a Morathi, and I am sure I will eventually. I would also really like to paint a Magnus at some point.   Right now I am enjoying painting whatever I have on my desk at the time. Currently, aside from the Scarab Occult Terminators, I have been working on a Scythes of the Emperor Primaris army that I am planning on selling in full later this year. It’s a super simple colour plan and I can knock out whole squads in a day or two.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Other artists who are way better than me, for one.  I also really enjoy just zoning out with some tunes while I paint, or different Youtube channels.
What other creative outlets do you use (music, canvas, art, etc)?
I used to play the guitar, but I haven’t had time or a drive for that it years, so its just painting miniatures right now.

What is your favourite convention or event? What event would you like to go?
I love Adepticon, it is so awesome seeing all the new models and really well-painted stuff. I don’t travel a ton so I am not sure what events I would attend other than what is within driving distance.
